Innovation in Perinatal Nursing

Sharon Carpinello

The definition of Innovation by Merriam Webster is:
1. the introduction of something new
2. a new idea, method, or device : novelty

Such a simple definition but one that truly motivates me and is one of the reasons why I love Perinatal nursing! As nurses, we see and experience new innovations on a regular basis. Recently the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) created a Trusted Leaders program that highlights some of the recent innovations within the Perinatal environment. AWHONN describes the Trusted Leaders Program as: “an in-depth, online program featuring interviews, news items, and sponsored editorial profiles of leaders and key organizations, showcasing the contemporary practices and innovative leadership provided by the nurses who serve as the front-line advocates for excellence in health outcomes for women and newborns.” GE Healthcare’s Centricity Perinatal is honored to be part of this program.

While we were working with ITN productions on the AWHONN trusted leaders program video, it was exciting to hear from our customers how much they have come to rely on our product to help them streamline their clinical workflows and prove the best care to their moms and babies. Angie Willoughby, a Registered Nurse (RN) from Mercy Health Hospital – Rockford Area Campus in Rockford, IL shared the following: “walking into a patient’s room, I feel like I can spend more time with my patient rather than feeling like I’m spending more time and attention on the computer versus my patient. Proper documentation on the Centricity Perinatal Connect module feeds right into the EMR, and gives me more time with my patient.” You can view GE Healthcare’s Trusted Leaders video located here: https://youtu.be/AOTtoBI4f2E

What Angie shared with me is the key to successful innovation, it’s those products that really promote clinical excellence and work directly with the clinician to achieve the goal versus working against them.

Another example in addition to Centricity Perinatal that does this as well is a product that was also highlighted in the Trusted Leaders program. The Joeyband™ by SleepBelt – they created a simple but cost effective solution to help reduce infant falls and promote safe skin-to-skin contact. The SleepBelt team is passionate about the Joeyband and this shines through with this innovative tool!

I challenge my fellow clinicians to seek out innovative tools that really work with you versus against you. Nurses need to be the voice to the decision makers within the healthcare setting. Innovation really does start with each and every one of you!
